What Your Skin Can Do When You Give It Time

Some of the oldest medical writings we have, more than three thousand years old, describe a simple way of caring for the skin. Honey was spread over the area that needed attention, covered with a layer of fat to hold it in place, and bandaged with cloth so that it stayed against the body for hours at a time. Honey remained a part of traditional medicine in many cultures for thousands of years afterward, and in one form or another, this way of caring for the skin stayed in use until very recently.

The ingredients were part of what made that remedy work, but there was something else in it that is easy to miss when we read about it today, which is that the honey was never meant to be applied and left to its own devices. The fat and the bandage were there to keep it against the skin for as long as possible, because the people using it understood, long before anyone could explain the mechanism, that the skin needed time with what it had been given.

That same understanding runs through much of the natural wisdom many of us still practice. A castor oil pack is a piece of flannel soaked in oil, laid over the abdomen, covered, and warmed for an hour or longer, and a poultice is pressed to the skin and bound in place so it can work through the night. In every one of these traditions, time was treated as an ingredient in its own right, and the covering was what made the time possible.

AO Patch was designed around that idea. It takes the oldest approach to skin care we know of and gives it the adhesive science, the material engineering, and the personalization that healers in the ancient world never had access to. To appreciate why that matters, it helps to understand what your skin is doing while a topical rests on its surface.

How Your Skin Takes Things In

The outermost layer of your skin is called the stratum corneum, and although it is remarkably thin, somewhere between fifteen and twenty layers of flattened cells, it is one of the great achievements of your body. Its job is to hold moisture in and keep the outside world out, and in the way it does that, it behaves a lot like the surface of a garden bed. When the soil is dry and packed, water runs off the top and very little gets through, but once the surface is moist, it loosens and lets water soak down to the roots.

Hydration does the same for your skin. A well-hydrated stratum corneum is measurably more receptive than a dry one, and one of the most reliable ways to raise that hydration is occlusion, which simply means covering the skin so that the moisture it naturally releases is held at the surface rather than escaping into the air, much the way a layer of mulch keeps a garden bed from drying out. This is well-established pharmacology, and it’s the principle behind the sealed, moisture-holding bandages that dermatologists and wound-care specialists have relied on for decades, because when you cover the skin, the skin becomes more receptive to whatever is underneath the cover.

The other thing to know is that your skin works on its own schedule. Taking in a topical is a gradual process, and the longer an ingredient stays in contact with hydrated skin, the more of it has the opportunity to be absorbed. Something applied to the wrist and then brushed against a sleeve a few minutes later has had a short window to work with, while something sealed in place for an entire evening has a very different one, and when you put those two ideas together, you have the reason that honey, held in place beneath fat and cloth, worked as well as it did. And also, you have the reason AO Patch is built the way it is.

Meet AO Patch

AO Patch is a soft white patch that you peel and press onto your skin. When you peel off the protective film, you'll see a foam ring at the center, and inside the ring is a sealed core that protects a paste made from three ingredients with long histories in skincare, along with a very unique mineral used in a lot of our other products.

The foam ring does two jobs at once. It cushions the patch so it conforms comfortably to the curve of a shoulder, a wrist, or a lower back, and it forms a small reservoir around the paste, which is what makes AO Patch yours. You can add a few drops of whatever you already use on your skin, whether that's an essential oil, castor oil, one of your AO Peptides serums, or a topical supplement, and the patch holds it there, sealed against your skin, for hours.

Everything is held in place by a medical-grade adhesive, the same class used in hospitals to keep a bandage firmly on the skin through a full day of movement without lifting at the edges, and we chose it because it keeps the patch and everything inside it exactly where you placed it.

What's in the Center

Each of the three ingredients in the paste has been trusted for generations, and each one earns its place for a different reason.

Medical-grade honey

Honey is one of the most thoroughly documented natural ingredients in the history of skin care, appearing in medical writings that are thousands of years old and in healing traditions around the world, and modern research has done a good deal to explain why it held such a lasting place. Honey is hygroscopic, meaning it draws moisture toward itself, which helps maintain a healthy moisture balance at the surface of the skin. It's naturally acidic, close to the mild acidity of healthy skin, and it contains an enzyme called glucose oxidase that produces small, steady amounts of hydrogen peroxide as the honey is diluted by moisture.

Medical-grade honey is honey that has been filtered and sterilized to the standards required in clinical settings, so what’s inside the patch is the same grade of honey used in hospital wound care rather than what comes off a grocery shelf. Of everything in the natural skin-care tradition, honey may be the ingredient with the most published research behind it, and it sits at the heart of AO Patch.

Petrolatum

If the word is unfamiliar, think of plain petroleum jelly, because that is exactly what petrolatum is. It has been in use for more than a century and a half, and dermatologists have recommended it for generations for a reason that is hard to argue with, which is that it reduces water loss from the surface of the skin by as much as ninety-eight percent, more than any other single ingredient in common use. Petrolatum is an occlusive, forming a soft, breathable barrier that holds moisture in and keeps environmental stress out, and because it is chemically inert, it is among the least likely ingredients to irritate even sensitive skin. In AO Patch, petrolatum is what creates the occlusive environment that helps your skin open up and take in what's inside the reservoir.

Lanolin

Lanolin is the natural wax that sheep produce to protect their wool from the weather, and what makes it special for human skin is how closely its lipids resemble the ones in your own stratum corneum, the mortar between the bricks. Because of that resemblance, lanolin does more than sit on the surface, softening into the outer layer of the skin and helping to restore its suppleness, which is why nursing mothers have used it for generations and why it remains a staple for cracked hands, heels, and lips. In AO Patch, lanolin keeps the paste pliable and comfortable, so the patch moves with you throughout the day.

Honey, petrolatum, and lanolin have thousands of years of combined use between them, and none of them was chosen because it sounded impressive on a label. Each one was chosen because it had already proven itself over generations, and AO Patch gives all three a way to stay on your skin long enough to do what they do best.

The Reservoir Is Yours

The reservoir at the center of the patch is the design decision we're proudest of, because it hands the choice to you. Many of the things people in the natural health world already love to put on their skin are things that reward contact time, and castor oil is the clearest example. A traditional castor oil pack asks for flannel, a covering, a heat source, and an hour of lying still, and people make the time for it because they find it worthwhile. A few drops of castor oil in the reservoir of an AO Patch, placed over the abdomen, gives you a castor oil pack you can wear under your clothes while you go about your day, and because the foam ring holds everything inside it, the oil doesn't leak or reach your clothing.

Essential oils work in much the same way. A drop of lavender applied to the wrist is lovely for the few minutes it lasts, while the same drop in a patch stays with you through the whole evening. Because the patch seals the skin, a little goes a long way, and if you normally dilute an oil in a carrier before applying it, you'll want to do the same here, since your skin will be more receptive under the patch and deserves the same care you would give it anywhere else.

Topical peptides belong here as well. If you use AO Peptides, you already know that they carry messages your skin cells recognize and that they work best when they reach the cells they're meant for, and placing a few drops of GHK-Cu, BPC-157, or any serum in the collection into an AO Patch and wearing it over the area you want to support gives that serum hours of uninterrupted contact with hydrated, receptive skin.

Covering the skin has been enhancing absorption for as long as people have been doing it, and what we built with AO Patch is a delivery vehicle worthy of the mechanism.

The Mineral at the Core

There is one more ingredient in the paste, and if you've used Solex's Negative Ion Power Patches, one of our Si Bin rings, or the AO Mask, you already know what that mineral is.

Si Bin is a fine mineral powder related to the tourmaline family, and tourmaline has interested scientists for centuries because of two well-documented properties it shares with very few other materials. It is piezoelectric, meaning it generates a small electrical charge when pressure is applied to it, and it is pyroelectric, meaning it does the same in response to changes in temperature, and both effects have been measured and studied in tourmaline since the nineteenth century. Worn against the body, where it sits under light pressure and is warmed by your skin, Si Bin is continuously generating these small charges, which is what gives it its negative-ion properties. Negative ions are negatively charged particles that are drawn to positively charged ones and help bring them into balance.

Si Bin is a mineral with real, measurable physical properties, and it has been part of Solex products for years because of how people respond to it. The thousands of customers who wear it describe feeling more balanced, steadier through demanding days, clearer in their thinking, and quicker to recover.* Those are personal experiences, but the consistency of what people report is exactly why Si Bin earned its place at the core of AO Patch. It also has one more quality that matters for the next section: it holds a frequency imprint exceptionally well.

Imprintable With SEFI

If you use AO Scan, you know the Subtle Energy Frequency Imprinter, or SEFI, the tool that lets you imprint a frequency onto an object so you can carry it with you. AO Patch was designed to be one of those objects, and because of the Si Bin at its core, it holds an imprint and delivers it to the body better than anything we've created before.

When you open SEFI and scroll to the bottom section in your AO Scan program, you'll find AO Patch listed, and from there you can imprint anything in the frequency library, including Inner-Voice and affirmations, the same way you would imprint anything else. You'll also find six programs created specifically for the patch: Dopamine Activation, Exosome Activation, Glutathione Activation, Pain Receptor Activation, Stem Cell Activation, and Supplement Delivery.

Supplement Delivery is the one to reach for when you've added something to the reservoir, because if your patch is carrying castor oil or a peptide serum, imprinting it with Supplement Delivery supports your body in receiving and making use of what you've placed there.* The other five each have their own focus, and while any of them can be imprinted onto a SEFI dot or another object, they were programmed with the patch and the way it delivers in mind.

If you already use SEFI dots, you'll find that the two complement each other. A dot is small and works as a gentle reminder to your body about something you're working on. AO Patch covers more skin, carries honey and Si Bin along with your own topical, and holds all of it in place for hours, so many people will find a place for both in their routine.

When you put it all together, one patch brings three things to your body at once, the nutrient you chose, a frequency imprint, and the natural properties of Si Bin, and that is a kind of personalization a topical routine has never offered before.

A Day With AO Patch

The best way to understand AO Patch is to walk through an ordinary day and notice the moments when you already reach for something to put on your skin, because each one of them is a place where a patch can give that moment a few more hours.

Morning

You're heading out the door with coffee in hand, and instead of reaching for a diffuser you'll be away from all day, you place a drop of AO Peppermint into a fresh patch and press it on under your sleeve. By the time you've settled in at your desk, that bright, cooling scent is still with you, and it will be there through the rest of the morning.

After a workout

The warming oil or recovery blend you would normally rub into your shoulders goes into the reservoir instead, and the patch goes on under your shirt before you leave the gym. It works through your commute and your meetings without a second application, and if there's a knee or an elbow that asks for attention, a patch on either side of the joint focuses the Si Bin and whatever you've added right where you want it. The adhesive was made for this kind of placement, where a joint bends and straightens all day long.

Midday

This might be a patch with a few drops of your favorite AO Peptides serum, worn at the collarbone or over the area you'd like to support, giving that serum hours of contact with hydrated, receptive skin while you go about your afternoon.

Evening

You unwind with AO Lavender in a fresh patch at your temple or the inside of your wrist, as part of the same ritual as dimming the lights and setting your phone aside. The scent you love at nine o'clock is still gently there at midnight, and the patch stays comfortably in place through the night.

Before bed, for castor oil

If castor oil packs are already part of your practice, a patch over the abdomen with a few drops of castor oil in the reservoir gives you the same long, uninterrupted contact without the flannel, the heating pad, or the hour of lying still, and because the foam ring holds the oil inside, nothing reaches your sheets.

Travel days

A dry cabin and a dry hotel room would normally leave your skin depleted, so a patch applied before boarding works for hours while you do everything else. Hands and heels that have worked hard respond the same way, because honey, lanolin, and petrolatum do their best work when they're given time.

The Oldest Idea in Skin Care, in Your Hands

For thousands of years, people cared for their skin with honey, a covering, and patience, and they did it that way because it worked. AO Patch takes that same idea and brings it into your life as it is today, with an adhesive that stays through a full day, a paste made from ingredients that have been trusted for generations, a mineral core that so many of our customers already love, and a reservoir that holds whatever you choose to put in it.

Your skin has always known how to receive what it’s given. With AO Patch, you can give it your oil, your serum, your imprint, and your routine, and then give it the one thing it has always needed most: enough time to take it all in.
